Charter School vs. Public School

I have the opportunity to attend a Charter school for the last two years of high school. Please help me decide what is best!

Pro:

Charter School

  • All homework and assignments are done over computers
  • The goal of the school is technology and helping one survive in college and beyond
  • The hours are only 8:30 - 12:30
  • All classes are PAP/AP and count for college credit
  • They have a community service programs
  • They have connections to foreign exchange programs
  • They have project-based learning systems
  • No dress code
  • Allows iPod and cell phones
  • Short school day allows more time for extra-curricular activities

Public School

  • Has just as many AP classes
  • Has an orchestra which I play in
  • Has several clubs and extracurricular activities
  • Has National Honor Society and more chapters of other societies
  • Has several scholarship opportunities
  • I have friends there
  • I am already in the top ten percent (automatic admission to colleges in my state)
  • Has community service programs
Con:

Charter School

  • They are brand new, so their success can not be proven
  • They do not have the National Honor Society or other societies like that
  • They do not have as many scholarship opportunity as my public school
  • Their small size makes being in the top ten percent more difficult (in my state the top ten percent has automatic admissions to high school)
  • Does not have an orchestra
  • Only has two clubs

Public School

  • Dress code
  • Longer school day
  • No cell phones or iPods
  • Large size makes recommendation letters less personal

Con arguments

Go Public

Don't go to the charter school. It seems good on the surface, but once you get there, you'll realize that you're missing out on all the things that make high school fun. Charter schools are more like professions in that it's a lot of work, and you're expected to do all of it and nothing else. What I mean is they assign homework based off of the assumption you have nothing better to do, just like in a job. Public high schools are going to give you homework, but not so much that it's overwhelming. I know this from experience (I attend a charter school). Not to mention that charter schools have almost no social lives, whereas everyone at a public school is extremely social. In general, public school is more fun. It's a trade-off. In my opinion, the slightly better rules and maybe better education isn't worth it. I'd go public school for sure.
