The Dilemma of Usefulness
I am interested in buying a really nice trombone because I am going off to college next year, and intend to play with the band. However, my parents say I should wait on the trombone and get a car instead.
Trombone:
- Access to personal instrument, no renting or borrowing from school
- cheaper than normal - $700 compared to $1,898
- good quality - won't break or loose value
- used in long term
- good resale value (if necessary)
Car:
- uninhibited transportation access
- own the car (no sharing with siblings)
- ease in day to day routine
Trombone:
- $700
- parents are unsure about whether it is a good investment
Car:
- Gas/ maintenance
- reliability
- price issue (parents won't pay more than x amount; x goes down as price goes up, then budging into reliability)
- not applicable during freshman/sophomore years at college
- resale value tends to be poor
New pro con lists
So I am torn between living on campus next year or continuing to commute. my friends are getting an awesome on-campus apartment and I really want to live with them. However.
I have been with this guy for about 4 months and things were pretty good until he broke his leg. He became very hard to deal with and started being rude to myself and my children.
