Living in a rental house

in

We all dream to have a nice house, away from the every day agitation, where we can forget about work and just have a good time with family and friends. But is this dreamy house our own or is it rented?

Renting a property
Pro:
  • freedom of movement: if we have to change jobs, we can look for a house nearby
  • cheaper: if we don't have the money to buy a house, rentals is offer us the same comfort with less money
  • less troubles: we don't have to pay taxes or building insurance and the owner takes care of repairs and maintenance
  • it is easy to move if we are not comfortable with the place we rented and we want more space, bigger garden, nicer neighbors
  • even though living in a rental house is sometimes seen as wasteful, it really means more money for us, money we can spend on things we like
  • if we can't afford to pay the rent, there are always cheaper options to consider: a smaller apartment or house, another neighborhood
  • there is no need to worry whether the interest rates go up or down
  • rental houses or apartments make us more relaxed, even if it doesn't look that way to many people: we can afford to stay more between jobs without the fear of losing the house with a mortgage on, we can enjoy fun stuff (concerts, movies, theater). Most important, living in a small apartment makes us really good at throwing or giving away things we don't use or need; and less stuff in our home means less stuff on our mind.
  • for those who didn't buy a house when the prices were up to the rough, living in a rental property was the best business of their life: not buying a house made them not loose tens of thousands of dollars
  • in case of economical problems or job loses, state benefits are better for those who rent a property
Con:
  • rentals, especially apartment buildings, are most of the times located in less desirable areas, like on busy streets
  • some experiences with the owners are not very cheerful: no negotiations for the removal of the old and smelly carpets or old furniture, extra payments for the things that don't work
  • we never know how the neighbors will be: nice and friendly or loud and scary?
  • paying the rent = dead money
  • if the owner gives us a notice, we have to find somewhere else to live
  • we never know what the costs of living will be in a rental house: there might be loses of water, lacks of energy efficiency that will raise the bills
  • paying the rent limits our saving deposits for buying our own property
  • people with a history of bad credit have problems renting a house
  • renting a property and settling down are usually contradictory
  • we can't get involved too much (paint the wall as we would like, change the furniture, remove the things we don't like), because we never know when we will have to find another place to stay
