Should we get a dog?

We have a good-sized house, big fenced-in backyard. We have a cat and two kids under 5.

Pro: 

We want our kids to grow up with a dog, like we did when we were young.
It would add a new, fun element to the family mix.
The dog is 7 years old.
The dog is neutered & house-broken.
The dog is a very calm and even-tempered.
The dog loves cats and children.
The dog likes being indoors more than out.
He's older, so it won't be a long-term commitment (wow, that sounds horrible lol)
The dog likes being in the car.
Taking him on walks.
The love and joy we'll experience by having a pet dog.

Con: 

The dog is older so medical costs may increase more in the next few years.
He has fluffy black hair so shedding will happen and will be annoying.
We aren't sure where to place his food & water bowls where the kids can't reach them but where he can still get to them whenever he wants.
The dog's feet will be gross after coming in from the outside stepping in who-knows-what and thus dragging it across our house.
The mess while eating/drinking.
The possibility of him hurting the children.
The possibility of the children hurting him.
Trying to find someone to care for him when we're out of town.
Cleaning up after him in the house.
Cleaning up after him outside.
The vet & food bills.
Having to take him for walks.
