Sports vs Money

I'm currently in the first week of my freshman year at a small college in New England. In order to expand my social horizons, I joined a sports team. This was mostly because a) I wanted to make more friends and b) I needed something to occupy my time because I couldn't get a job. However, the day that practices started I saw a notice for a job that I am perfectly qualified for. I would probably get it. However, not if I had to devote lots of time to this team. Part of me wants to quit the team and take the job (I really need the money) and the other part feels bad because I'm one of two athletes on a team of 16 that can play a certain position. If I leave, there's only one person for that position and the position is vital to the success of the team. They might be able to find another person to fill the spot, but I'd feel bad if I left after only one practice. Should I leave the team for the job or just stay on the team?

Pro:

Job:

  • Money, money, money. I know it's not the most important thing in the world, but practically speaking, it will be quite useful.
  • I've had a job like this one before, and it's not nearly as stressful as being on a sports team.
  • Flexible hours.
  • Low intensity environment.

Team:

  • Sense of community.
  • More friends (hopefully).
  • Sense of honor.
  • Stay in shape.
Con:

Job:

  • Kind of boring.
  • Dealing with impatient, rude people.
  • Serving other students is somewhat demeaning.
  • Less sense of community/honor.

Team:

  • - Teammates may not like me.
  • High stress environment.
  • Takes up more of my time I could be using to study.
  • No money.
