Tipping

Good lunch, bad service. Do you tip?
Bad lunch, good service. Are you willing to pay the waiter some extra money?
Bad lunch, bad service. Would you ask the waiter to pay you and not the another way around?

Waiter
Pro:
  • if you are a regular customer of a specific restaurant, then you better get used with tipping, so you can expect to be served faster and better next time. And if you are used to leave small tips, don't expect any favors, especially if it's a crowded and highly appreciated restaurant
  • some waiters are underpaid just because it is known and expected to get tips
  • we are used to refer to waiters when we talk about tipping, but we give tips to people every day: to the gardener, to the doorman who helped you with the groceries, to the person who helped you move, to the taxi driver and so on. We are tipping for different services and most of the times, we feel good saying "Keep the change" - for few moments we feel rich and generous and we make people feel good about their jobs or services
  • tips represent a reward for a good service, if you are not forced to tip by the staring look of the person in front of you and by the "what are you waiting for?" attitude :))
Con:
  • tipping doesn't make your lunch better or worse because you pay for it after you eat it, so no one could tell how much will you tip the waiter if you are a news customer
  • a good service shouldn't be related to a big tip. A waiter should be friendly, polite and willing to help no matter the tip
  • in some countries tips are included on the bill, so you and the waiter both know how much is the tip. But this practice could make some waiters less motivated because they know from the moment you order that they will be tipped and how much they will be tipped
  • the problem with tipping is that you are not always sure how much to tip: do you tip 10% of the order's value, do you tip more or less than ten percents? If you just asked for a glass of water, how much should you be tipping?
