Travel planning on the fly

A journey planned on the fly requires only one condition: you need to know the date when you are going on vacation. From that date on, the rest is a mystery to be discovered day by day, depending on what you and your travel mates feel like seeing or doing. It's a good option for you, a maybe or a definitely not?

Map
Pro:
  • you can have a flexible schedule on vacation. There is no fixed timetable, so you can adjust the program to your mood: you can visit places that were not on your list in the beginning of the trip or you can cut destinations just because the weather is not in your favor
  • there are moments during a trip when you want to see more of a city or less of a specific destination and that's possible if you are going on a trip planned on the way
  • a journey like this can be a lot of fun. Imagine wondering in the morning where would you like to be and getting there before sunset!
  • on a vacation planned by a travel agent, you have to stick to the schedule: sleep until 8, breakfast at 8:30, get in line by 9:00 and so on.Going on your own in a trip planned on the fly is more relaxing and fun: if you feel like sleeping until 10:00 after a tiring day or moving along at 4 o'clock in the morning to get the sunrise at your next destination, there nothing who could stop you. No travel agent is better planner than your and your travel mates are.
  • coming to the end of the holiday usually means  that the amount of the money left is not very impressive, but with a trip planned on the way you can choose the rest of the destinations based on your budget
Con:
  • even if it's trip planned on the way (or better said, a no-plan trip), some homework has to be done: you need to find out which areas would you like to see, which major attractions would you want to visit, want fun activities would you like to try; you also need to make an estimation of how much would cost you the accommodation, the transport, the local commute, the entrance fee for the most important museums, a normal meal- you should have an idea of the budget you need
  • if you and your travel mates have different interests, you like to spend the time in different ways, than it might be better to choose an offer of a travel agency, because this type of planning, on the way, requires flexibility, good communications skills - no one would like to see it's vacation turned into a nightmare just because he/she doesn't share the same interests with his/her travel mates
  • travel planning on the fly usually means many places to see, many things to experience and miles on the road, so in the end you might feel tired and ask for a vacation after this vacation
  • if you want to going with your family, kids included, then you might feel more relaxed with a travel agent's offer
  • the accommodation for a trip planned on the way is a matter of chance
  • travel agents usually obtain a better price for accommodation and groups have important discounts when  visiting tourist attractions, so going on your own might cost your more
  • if the trip you plan is ambitious, with many locations on your list, you should get used with packing and unpacking
  • if you are used with luxurious vacations or all inclusive offers, than travelling with plans made on the way might not be a good option because you might miss the spa reservation, you might have to skip your breakfast or delay your lunch or might even have to accept an uncomfortable accommodation
